04/28/12 Bass & Blues Busting Bait Off Of Belmar PDF Print E-mail

Johnny Kane stepped on the Last One yesterday with his Zebco 808 in hand. Capt Rob chuckled when he saw it. A half hour run north and 2 casts later Johnny Kane landed a 16 pound Bluefish, and then a Bass, and then another. By the end of the day Capt Rob was a believer. Jigs were the ticket for most of the afternoon for both Stripers and Monster Blues. After the boat traffic subsided the fish were up on top busting pods of bait. We broke out big floating poppers and were sight casting to the fish boiling on top. We were giggling like little kids as the Bass flew up in the air as they crashed the plugs. After two hours of non stop action we headed back to the dock with 31 Bluefish and 10 Stripers in the box. We lost count of how may fish went back in the water, but we did keep count of the 1 Penn 965 reel and custom Star rod I dropped in. Oops...!

Lisa Ramsthaler and her nephews, Steven and Adam, along with Steve Pesce and his son John booked Wednesdays trip with us because none of them had ever caught a Striped Bass. Capt. Rob put the group on acres of bunker right outside our inlet. The bass were under the bait, and everyone put a fish in the boat. Stephen had the biggest fish of the day weighing in at 32 pounds.

I'll share Lisa's email she sent to us after the trip:

Hi Captain Rob and First Mate Tippy,

We had a great time fishing on 6/22/11. None of us had ever caught striped bass, and we all wound up catching one!It was a memorable experience for all of us and we hope to charter with you again in the future. Thanks again for a great trip. Lisa, Steven and Adam Ramsthaler and Steve and John Pesce

Capt. Rob had the Dave Young charter out today in search of more of these big bass. They didn't have to go far, the schools of bunker were just off Asbury. Dave landed a nice 25 pound Striper on the first drop. The group had 2 other runoffs that were not typical of even the largest stripers. Both ended up being thresher sharks that ate the live bunker. Neither were landed but one of them put on quite a show with 4 jumps before it bit or chaffed through the mono leader. Later on in the trip, they anchored up at the rocks and caught 7 more bass and a dozen bluefish.

AM - We started the day with the Scott Richardson charter in search of some Fluke action. Let's just say, the fluking wasn't stellar. They group caught and released numerous fish that were close, but not good enough. Capt. Rob made a few drops on structure where they put together a respective catch of Sea Bass.

PM - Dr Mike headed out again today, but this time he brought along his parents. The Last One ran north to anchor up for an afternoon of chumming. The bluefish action was hot, with 25 fish in the 6 to 10 pound range. In addition to the blues, they landed 8 local stripers, 2 of them were short and were released. Needless to say, Mom and Dad had a great time. Dr Mike..........great fathers day gift!
